Canyon de Chelly National Monument & Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site, Arizona

9/23: returning to the Navajo Nation the previous evening, we spent two nights in Chinle for our visit to this canyon.

North Rim Drive.

Antelope House Ruin (ca. 1300 AD) at base of the cliff.

Even though this is Federal land, it is also the ancient ancestral home of the Navajo and they have permission to live and farm on the floor of the canyon.

Mummy Cave Ruin (Puebloan, ca. 1300 AD)

South Rim Drive.

White House Ruin, ca. 1000 AD.

Some large petroglyphs are visible on the face of the cliff below the upper structure.

Spider Rock, 800-foot sandstone spire at the junction of Canyon de Chelly and Monument Canyon.  Black Rock Butte is on the horizon above the left spire.

Hubbell Trading Post; Ganado, Arizona

The main room of this mercantile from 1876.

Rifle collection.

Kachinas.
